I have never travelled with RA before. Does anyone have any tips for purchasing holiday insurance, carrying drugs and anything else. I'm planning a coach river cruise along the Rhine and Moselle valley. I will be travelling through France and Germany. I'm a bit nervous about it all, especially if I have a flare when away. During my last flare I could barely move. However I'm going to try not to let RA stop me going. I already had to cancel my holiday to visit my son who's living in Taiwan and that broke my heart.

hi naomi, insurance is not that bad, last time i went with staysure and put all my ailments down and was surprised at the cost, its a mind field,i only go to spain so dont go far,i got a letter from rhuemy for meds and took mtx in tabs instead of injection just for saftey sake,i keep all my meds with me at all times when traveling also my walking stick went on the conveyor at customs no prob,i did get a steriod depo before i went as i was in so much pain the year before from flying, talk to the rheumy for advice and a list of hospitals on your route they will be able to get them for you,i always get the name of the nearset clinic to my hotel just for reasurance,i did take things easy as often as poss and tried not to get flustered but not easy or when on hols to keep to routine, sounds a lovely trip, hope someone can help, dorothy.

Hi Naomi,

I agree with Dorothy, most insurances only add on about £10 or £20 for RA cover. You should have no problem with the drugs, is it Plaquenol you are on? Just keep them in your hand luggage in case your suitcase goes astray.
Try to get a depo steroid injection before you go to help and prevent flares while you are away, then just relax and enjoy your holiday!

Love Doreen xx

Hello there,

I have travel insurance with my Gold current account with Lloyds and they do not add any
loading, also I have an M and S c.c. and they also do not have a loading on for RA.

Thanks everyone. I thought RA was going to add loads to the price but this is reassuring. I'm on Plaquenil now (plus all the other secondary meds) but if this changes with my hospital appointment on Monday I'll remember to ask about carriage, especially if it's in injectable form. Best wishes everyone.
